Carnelian
Normally uniform tawny-red or orangy-red but often banded when held up to the light.Carnelian was extensively used in intaglio carving, fob seals, and Regency necklaces. Also very popular at this time were cushion-shaped plaques mounted in Roman style seal settings.
Rock crystal
The colourless variety of quartz used since the earliest of times. Usually polished ‘ en cabochon’ often depicting naturalistic scenes and creatures. Rock crystal was used widely in Belle Époque jewellery. Art Deco jewellery saw rock crystal cut into geometric and architectural shapes and mounted with sapphires and rubies and very effectively with carnelian, onyx and coral. The stone was much used by Fabergé in objects of virtue and accessories
